Urgh, the Unsightly Yellow Nails

Hello everyone. My nails been looking sad apparently my base coat isn't preventing doing a good job in preventing nails from staining like its suppose to. Its sad to see my nails have been stained pretty bad, or very bad (as how I'd put it). Because of that, I went on a hunt for a different base coat - at the very least, to find one that is able to prevent further staining (since I can't part with nail polish at the moment). Also the nails are really embarrassing to go out with, with its degree of yellowness. So after browsing through the internet, I've decided to try out Rimmel London's Whitener base coat - it claims to prevent discolouration. Anyway, I am taking this chance to mask my yellow nails as while waiting for them to grow out also to see if this base coat do prevents discolourations.

Warning: Really ugly/yucky yellow nails ahead!

Yeap, see what I meant by really yellow stained nails? Its just horrible considering the fact that I do use base coats every time I do my nails. Konad base coat doesn't prevent yellowing at all!

This is two thin coats of Rimmel London's Whitener. I must say I'm pretty impressed. No, it doesn't act as a whitening agent-its just a base coat that colours your nails a little whitish. Rimmel London Whitener is a really beautiful creamy-jelly white base coat with gorgeous blue-purple shimmers in it. But I find that its also great to wear it on its own. While it did a good job in covering most of the yellow, I wanted a little more purplish sheer colour on my nails.

I decided to take a little trip to the mall in search of this sheer lilac shade that I've had in mind. I'm glad to say that my search is successful! And this nail polish have indeed become one of my favourites! Woohoo!!

Care to Danse? is a really light sheer lilac jelly polish. It is a build-able formula. I might do a sandwich with this next time. Care to Danse? is one of the nail polishes from OPI NYC Ballet Soft Shades Collection and there's great swatches over here at Scrangie which you can view them.

Tada! Just 1 coat of Care to Danse? over Rimmel London Whitener to mask my unhealthy looking nails. I'm really loving how my nails look. While they aren't exactly natural looking but I'm glad they made my nails looking much better than before. Feels a little like magic to me (haha!). Care to Danse? is certainly a great shade to wear on days when you are feeling in the subtle mood. And its streak free (as I would expect of OPI nail polishes). I think it looks wonderful with 1 coat or in 2-3 coats.

Well, its going to take awhile before I'm able to truly judge if Rimmel London's Whitener base coat really works in preventing yellowing or not. But for the moment, I'd be wearing this combination on times/days when I just love (or miss) the healthy looking nails.

Which base coats do you use? Did they do a good job in preventing your nails from yellowing? Do share your experiences in the comments below :)

  2. I used to use the Seche Clear base coat that I got for free with my purchase of Seche Vite top coat. Used it for quite a while until I noticed my nails were turning yellow. Guess there is a reason it's free ==. Switched to the Sally Hansen nail treatments, and now more than half the yellow has grown out :)

    1. Yeah, you should. Good base coats should prevent nail lacquers from staining your nails, especially dark ones. Rimmel sure dries fast! So far, I really enjoy using it :)

I found out recently that Sally Hansen Double Duty top to bottom is the best for keeping the nail from stains, i dont use it as a top coat bc i love me some seche vite, but believe me when i tell you i have found nothing better than that base... Not to mention its like 3 bucks! Cant beat the price :)
